Coming from Guangzhou, China, Shaw Daan is both a traditional Chinese painter and a graffiti artist. These two artistic techniques have come together to create her unique style of soft strokes and lines with solid and vibrant colours. In an interview, she explained that this style comes naturally to her, and that she subconsciously paints people and objects with a very delicate feel, and with intense colours.
Growing up, Daan’s parents were both painters, meaning she was surrounded by art from a very young age. Inherently, she followed the same path and found her own style that resonated with her most. She graduated from the Mural Painting Department of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts and the China Academy of Art. Daan's art portrays a blend between tradition and modernism and a blend of cultures, through the mixture of Chinese flower art and contemporary graffiti art.
After developing her personal style and exploring mixed media, in 2024, she was invited to paint for the HKWalls event. She had the opportunity to paint on the wall of a fashion boutique, Blossom&Beyond. The wall of this shop follows the same curve as the street, giving it more dimension while also reflecting the atmosphere of the street. To mirror the mood of the street in front, Daan created a painting called “Moving Flowers,” which portrays a woman with long black hair, surrounded by clouds, flowers, and fish. The woman looks as if she is floating, echoing the flow of the bustling streets in the city.
